More information

Guitarist Robbie McIntosh has one of the highest musical pedigrees you’ll find anywhere on the planet. A long time member of The Pretenders and the Paul McCartney Band, he has carved out a career recording and touring alongside the biggest names in music, including Talk Talk, Paul Young, Mark Knopfler, Tears For Fears, Joe Cocker, Cher, Kirsty McColl, Paul Carrack, Boyzone, Roger Daltrey, Tori Amos, Mike and the Mechanics, George Martin, Eric Bibb and Norah Jones. Recent tours include John Mayer, where he did all the slide guitar work, Sinead O’Connor and Sir Tom Jones!

After picking up the guitar aged 10, Robbie went through the usual route of teenage pub bands before he got a call from Chris Thompson who, at the time, was the singer in Manfred Mann's Earth Band (Blinded By The Light). He had an outfit called Filthy McNasty who played a lot at The Bridge House, Canning Town, The Golden Lion, Fulham, etc. Chris asked Robbie to join as lead guitar player. In November 1978 the band went to L.A. to record with Richard Perry for his Planet Record label. The name of the band was changed to Night and they toured in America for most of 1979 supporting The Doobie Brothers.

Night split in 1980 but  his friendship with Pretenders guitarist  James Honeyman-Scott led Robbie to join The Pretenders in September '82 after James sadly died of a heroin overdose. He toured extensively and recorded two albums with the band (Learning to Crawl and Get Close) before calling it a day in September '87. Robbie carried on doing session work through 1988, including some sessions for Paul McCartney, which led to Robbie (on Chrissie Hynde's recommendation) joining his band. He played with McCartney right through to the end of 1993, doing two world tours plus smaller excursions, and two studio albums (Flowers in the Dirt and Off the Ground) and three live albums (Tripping the Live Fantastic, Unplugged and Paul is Live)..

Robbie’s brilliance across a range of music, both on acoustic and electric guitar has made him one of the world’s most sought after session guitarists, and he has continued to tour and record with many of the most famous names in music.

His band for tonight’s show features some of his old friends and fellow session men, who between them have played with more names than it is possible to mention, but include: The Waterboys, Thea Gilmore, Andy Summers, Go West, Robert Fripp, Leo Sayer, Rory Gallagher, Toyah Wilcox, Lisa Stansfield, Judie Tzuke, Sandi Thom and Andy Fairweather-Low.
